Throughout the years that have passed since the great philosophers introduced the concept of self-awareness, there has been a movement to further understand human consciousness. Scientists and philosophers alike have studied and attempted to define consciousness, but for the most part, their results have had mixed results.
However, these various studies and ensuing conclusions have created some very crazy and incredible theories about human consciousness to explain the results they received. Let us examine some of the more notable ones.
5 Bizarre Theories about Human Consciousness
1) Each Cell in the Body is Conscious – When scientists and great thinkers consider consciousness, there is a binding problem which problematic to many explanations. This is because the human body receives information from so many individual sensory elements, and yet these elements are not physically connected. So how do they communicate?
This is when the “single neuron theory” claims that every individual neuron has its own level of consciousness. This is implying that every neuron receives and relays information in a conscious-like manner, yet they are not able to combine data within a group. Thus, they believe a form of neuronal intercommunication is what provides a unified sensory output.
2) Many Minds Theory – This theory is actually a copy of the Many Worlds theory from the field of quantum mechanics. The quantum theory is the notion that each individual event creates its very own reality that is independent and separated from our reality, but just as real as ours. The Many Minds theory is simply a Many Worlds application to human consciousness.
This theory says that the multiverse will not change; it is only our perspective of the multiverse that changes. If infinite and endless outcomes of every potential action exist already, then when the event actually occurs, it is not so much an activity as merely our perception shifting. There are allegedly several millions of copies of every one of us that exist in alternate universals. So our brains are already connected and associate with all of those minds.
3) Our Consciousness if Passive – This is the theory that says we are simply overthinking our view of the human consciousness. This theory believes that the perceptions that we humans experience are not created by our human consciousness at all. In fact, our conscious doesn’t even react to it in any judgmental way. They feel that consciousness is more of an interpreter than anything else – it merely presents the information it receives with no control over our reactions.
Many of us believe our feelings, actions, and thoughts are being directed by our consciousness, when actually we’re give it way too much credit. Consciousness is merely mechanism with no ability to discern information has no free willing on its own.
4) Electrical Activity of the Brain Creates Consciousness – This theory is known as the Conscious Electro-Magnetic Information theory and it believe that the brain’s own electromagnetic field is basically what drives human consciousness.
While the electromagnetic field is not directly our consciousness, the way it transmits information to each neuron and then regulates activity is what constitutes our human consciousness. So each of our conscious interactions is simply the experiences we are having with the electromagnetic field of our brain. Over times, this element of our brain has evolved, since evolution would only select elements needed for advantageous evolutionary functions.
5) Consciousness is created from the Complex Integration of Information – There are actually several similar theories about human consciousness which imply that any complex integration of data becomes conscious over time. Specifically, they are all referring to the Integrated Information Theory which claims that this act complexity itself will create consciousness.
Thus, any being’s consciousness level can be measured by complexity levels within its brain. Like it or not, this is the very first theory of consciousness that could be modeled mathematically.
Another notion that supports this belief is that the different individual components within the brain each possess different levels of complexity. And there is also a correlation indicating that systems which are less complex and also less essential for conscious thought. Additionally, each connection between these brain systems also their own level of complexities. Therefore, integration levels among these systems also imply consciousness as function of complexity.
