Mysterious Illness Makes You Puke if Smoke Lots of Weed

Mysterious Illness Makes You Puke if Smoke Lots of WeedA model named Chalfonte LeNee Queen suffered occasional experiences of violent retching and severe abdominal pain which put her on her back for literally days. There were times that she would even squirm on the floor from the pain – and this went on for 17 years.

“I’ve screamed out for death,” claims Queen, 48, who currently resides in San Diego. “I’ve cried out for my mom, who’s been dead for 20 years, mentally not realizing she can’t come to me.”

Caused Lots of Personal Trauma

Queen even lost her job as a model because her employer thought she was an alcoholic. She has accumulated some tens of thousands of dollars in medical and hospital bills. And this prevailing nausea has even interrupted her love life. And at the end of her illness, this 5-foot-9-inch woman has weighed a mere 109 pounds.

Across almost 20 years of pain, existing in a mental fog and violent puking, Queen went to the hospital around 3 times every year, the problem was that doctors never figured out what exactly was ailing her. By the year 2016, she believed that she was dying, and that she surely “must have some sort of cancer or something they can’t detect,” Queen said.

However, she actually did not have cancer. As it turns out, she actually had a little known syndrome which is referred to as cannabinoid hyperemesis syndrome. This is an ailment that has just recently received acknowledgement from the medical community. As you might imagine, it only affects a tiny part of the population — this is because not everyone who use marijuana will smoke it several times daily for a long period of time.

Currently, there is no hard data for the illness’ prevalence. However in Colorado and California, two states that have relaxed their marijuana laws recently, there are some emergency physicians who claim they are seeing the illness much more often. And there is a Colorado study that implies a potential link.

Dr. Aimee Moulin, who is an emergency room doctor at the UC-Davis Medical Center located in Sacramento, claims that she has witnessed an increase in the quantity of cases after voters in California legalized the recreational use of marijuana in November 2016. She is expecting to see even more increases when commercial sales are allowed beginning in 2018.

Doctors are telling us that it is very difficult to treat this condition. And there does not seem to be any cure aside from just quitting the use of marijuana altogether. And there are also several people who do not believe that cannabis is even the thing that is making them ill, so they choose to continue using it and they keep having vomiting episodes.

Additionally, doctors are also helpless in relieving the symptoms as well, as ordinary anti-nausea meds are not working and no available medication exists to prevent these vomiting episodes. Patients will most likely require intravenous hydration and even hospital stays until these symptoms cease.

“That’s really frustrating as an emergency physician,” states Moulin. “I really like to make people feel better.”

And if all this isn’t bad enough, it seems that a diagnosis of this syndrome is not only frustrating, but it can be expensive too. Currently, there are no blood tests which connect this stomach ailment to the use of marijuana, so doctors are forced to order CT scans and lab tests that are costly in order to rule out other medical ailments.
